  • Columnist is a journalist who writes editorials. He or she writes for publication in a series that appear in newspapers, magazines and other publications, including blogs on the Internet.

    Given below are some common interview questions that come up again and again during interviews for the post of Columnist.

    1. What qualities does a newspaper columnist should have?
    A columnist is responsible for producing an article. He or she should have good written communication skills to produce quality copy. A columnist should be very creative to find new angles for old stories. He must have natural interest in people, places and events. He must be able to write in clear, simple and understanding style. A columnist is expected to work in odd hours and under pressure.

    2. Why do you want to be a columnist? Who is your favorite journalist, and why?
    The interviewer wants to check your interest. This question offers you an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of the industry.” I have deep interest in media”.  “I had long before decided to be a columnist and so decided to study mass communication”. Also specify the name of a person whom you admire the most as a columnist and briefly state some of the qualities of that person.

    3. We have met several prospective columnists. Why are you the one we should hire?
    This question is essentially intended to ask you your talents and whether you know the requirements that are required of you to work for the company. One has to tell reasons as to why he fits into this position.” I am the right person for this job”. “I will bring to your organization my functional expertise which will bring success to your organization”.

    4. Describe the ideal job.
    For me work environment and level of responsibility is most important. I would like to work in a friendly and warm environment with individual’s works independently towards attaining team goals. I am not concerned about minor elements, such as dress codes, cubicles, and the level of formality.

    5. Can you work under pressure?
    It is a good question for you to shine. Give an example that shows that you can work to deadlines. Also state that- “I think that I work better under pressure, and I enjoy working in an environment that is tough”.

    It is very essential to be prepared for an interview. During the course of an interview, you may be asked various questions. Just one bad answer can stand out and cost you the job. Make sure that you frame good answers for these questions.
