Game Designer Interview Questions

  • Game Designer is a person who constructs or co-ordinates the mechanical, parametric and high-level design of a game. He or she designs the content and structure of the game. They build up the rules of the game, the setting, story and characters, props such as weapons and vehicles, and different ways to play the game.

    An interview is a two way communication process in which an interviewer asks question from a prospective candidate. Listed below are some of the questions that come up again and again in interviews for the post of Game Designer.

    1. Please tell us something about the roles and responsibilities that you had in your previous positions?
    I am a hard working person with a creative streak. I am efficient in producing games from concept till launch which includes writing game design documents, cooperating with art teams, defining game-play mechanics, overseeing product execution, and coming up with ideas on promoting the games.  I have excellent ability in designing single-player games.

    2. What are your educational qualifications, experience and skills?
    I have an extensive experience of seven years in this field where I worked with Windows, UNIX, and LINUX. I am proficient in languages such as C, C++, Java, HTML and CGI. I am familiar to Open Dynamics Engine, OpenGL, DirectX and Torque Game Engine, Visual Studio, dot Net, 3DSMAX, Oracle 8.0, Microsoft Office, Glade, Adobe Photoshop, Uleads Photo Impact, Paint shop pro, etc.

    3. Why do you want to make a career in this field?
    I find this field very lucrative. Game designing is considered as a hot career option. There has been the explosion of career opportunities in the area of game design. You have to tell those reasons for which you want to join this profession. Make a complete research on the respective field.

    4. Tell us something about the skills that are required to become a good game designer?
    This is a very important position hence it requires outstanding technical, problem-solving and communicational skills. People who hold this position should be creative, imaginative and original, must know a number of software packages, should understand the market and target audience for computer games. They must be able to function successfully in both team and independent work environments.

    5. Why should we select you for this post?
    I am the right person for this job. I will bring to your organization my technical know-how as well as my functional expertise which will bring success to your organization.
