  • A hardware design engineer is highly technical person who designs, develops, and tests computer or computer-related equipment for commercial, industrial, military, or scientific use. He or she designs and develops computer hardware and support peripherals, including central processing units, support logic, microprocessors, custom integrated circuits, printers, and disk drives.

    Given below are some common interview questions that come up again and again during interviews for the post of Hardware Design Engineer.

    1. What qualification and skills will you bring to our organization?

    I have excellent knowledge of hardware languages such as Verilog and VHDL; and hardware tools such as DxDesigner, Viewlogic, OrCAD Capture, Synplicity, Cadence Verilog-XL, Synopsys VCS, Synopsys Virsim, ModelSimSE, Xilinx ISE, Altera Quartus, and Timing Designer. I have effective written and verbal abilities. I am a hard working person with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

    2. What kinds of equipments have you designed till date?
    I have more than 4 years of experience in this field due to which I have developed excellent technical skills. I have strong hands on high speed board design and verification including analog and digital design, in embedded domain, in H/W board design supporting VOIP, in RS232c, USB, I2C, CAN interfaces with knowledge of PC based virtual terminals, in designing multi-clock domain boards, high speed signals and buses, in onboard PSU elements, in CAD Tools, and in signal integrity analysis. I have practical ability to debug H/W and F/W interaction issues, with ability to parse through onboard S/W to identify functional flaws.

    3. What is a Microprocessor? Give examples for 8 / 16 / 32 bit Microprocessor?
    Microprocessor is a program-controlled device, which fetches the instructions from memory, decodes and executes the instructions. Some of the 8-bit Processors are 8085, Z80, 6800; 16-bit Processor are 8086, 68000, Z8000; and some of the 32-bit Processor are 80386 and 80486.

    4. Why should we hire you for this post?
    Through this question the employer is looking for evidence that the job suits you, fits in with your general aptitudes and coincides with your long term goals. One has to tell reasons as to why he fits into this position. Demonstrate your accomplishments in front of the interviewer.
